Rocky Mountain High

Marilyn Rodriguez sat with her back to the rock outcropping overlooking the still shadowed valley below. Her daughter Serena’s bedraggled head was cradled in her lap, and she slept like a log, or so Marilyn thought wistfully. She brushed a stray hair from her daughter’s dirty and scratched face, not even eliciting a twitch from her exhausted offspring. Such was the depth of her fatigue.

They had been on the road – or more properly in the bush - for over four weeks and were tired, hungry and long past the point of utter hopelessness. Somehow, they remained alive, but each new day brought more misery – fear, hunger, thirst - to remind them of their desperate plight.

It was early morning yet, just after first light, and in the slowly growing blaze of the sun, Marilyn could see clearly the horrific scene unfolding downhill about a quarter or half a mile away. Men in greenish-brown military uniforms – and quite a few with the distinctive all-brown shirts and berets of the La Raza Militia – were scrambling to outflank what looked to be a small unit of the American military who were perched on top of small hill on the far side of the valley.

The sound of automatic gunfire and mortars echoed through the steep stone face on either side of the ancient walls of this once quiet place. Marilyn winced at one particularly loud explosion from a shell that went off course and detonated a few hundred yards away from where she and her small group of frightened and desperate refugees huddled in obscurity. Her sleeping daughter didn’t even twitch at the angry report, another testament to her sheer exhaustion and weakness.

A month before, Marilyn had just barely escaped from suburban Denver with her and her daughter’s lives intact, though she did lose her son Nathan in the initial panic after the uprising of the La Raza Militia. Her home in Aurora went up in flames as mobs of looters had descended on the gated communities to take their fair share of the wealth stolen from them, as they had long been told for years.

Indeed, even though Marilyn never really paid much attention to it, the endless waves of illegal immigrants from south of the border had been fed a steady diet of revolution and economic inequality brainwashing. Every guy named Jose from the Yucatan or gal named Ixtela from Sonora were told that America had stolen half their country from them, and when they hopped over the barely defended border, they truly felt they were patriotically reclaiming the land of their ancestors – the Reconquista, they called it.

Of course it didn’t matter that none of them ever had any ancestors from the modern day American Southwest, and that Mexico only owned all that land for three decades after independence just because it had inherited lines on a map from Spain – no, every Mesoamerican indio or mestizo thought it belonged completely to them regardless of treaties or time.
